Der Verlag wurde am 21.5.1838 von Buchhändler Georg Westermann (1810-1879) in Braunschweig als Verlagsbuchhandlung gegründet. Seit Bestehen lag der Schwerpunkt im Verlegen und Drucken von Schulbüchern und -atlanten.
