Das Porträt wiederholt Albrecht Dürers Selbstbildnis aus dem Rosenkranzfest, einem 1506 im Auftrag deutscher Kaufleute für die venezianische Kirche San Bartolomeo gemalten Altarbild (Tschechische Nationalgalerie, Prag). Hans Rottenhammer kopierte Dürers Gemälde um 1600 in Venedig. Lukas Kilian mag Rottenhammers Kopie in Augsburg gesehen haben, wohin Rottenhammer 1604 zog.
