Description

In the center of the composition is a panic-stricken wide-eyed woman torn between two groups: with her left hand she grabs a man, while he, evading her clutches, is reprimanded by another man. From behind, the young woman is besieged by an old woman – a procuress? – and several multi-faced, unfaithful men. She has to choose between marriage and prostitution. It is a hopeless conflict, the disastrous outcome of which is hinted at in the background, with a woman tied to a dead tree. (TD 2024, translation Büro LS Anderson, Berlin)
