Description

Some young women amuse themselves by blanket-tossing male straw mannequins. Goya had already treated this playful subject in a cartoon for a tapestry in 1791/92, but here he also included the image of a donkey and a man woven into the outstretched blanket: the silly men become a plaything for female caprice. An annotation in
Goya’s hand on a trial proof of this scene reads: “Con los burros se juega a los peleles” (playing dolls with asses). (TD 2024, translation Büro LS Anderson, Berlin)
