Argos [Sagengestalt]

Der hundertäugigen Riese Argos (Argus) war von der Göttin Hera, der Ehefrau des Zeus bestellt, um seine Geliebte Io zu bewachen ("mit Argusaugen beobachten"). Von seinen Augen mussten immer nur zwei schlafen, und die anderen konnten weiter wachen.
Nachdem Argos von Hermes getötet worden war, wurde die in eine Rinderkuh verwandelte Io durch Hera von einer Rinderbremse gejagt, durch viele Länder verfolgt und überquerte dabei auch die Meerenge bei Byzanz (Konstantinopel, Istambul), die seither Bosporus (Rinderfurt) heißt. Die hundert Augen des Argos warf Hera auf die Schwanzfedern des Pfaus, ihres Lieblingsvogels.
